I know that you must be feeling a whole lotta stuff right now regarding Jake’s diagnosis. One of those things definetly should be hope. I worked with young adults with developmental disabilities for a lot of years, and I can tell you that life may not be as easy for him as for others (like it’s really easy for any of us! We all have our challenges!), but it can be good. Specifically, I met one young man with Aspergers, and he ended up not even needing or qualifying for our services, cause he was making too much money at his full time job, and he was too busy to meet with my staff members. With loving, supportive parents like you, on top of any training or meds he needs, he will do great.

That gives me such a surge of hope, Laura. I know that Jake’s future is very bright, but there’s a part of me that also grieves for his reality… that he’s going to have definite, built-in struggles above those we each face. The man we spoke with yesterday really praised Jake’s demeanor. He said that the people testing him thought he was a pleasure to work with… he was funny, kind, generous… and that they very rarely say that of 9 year old kids going through such strenuous days. I am so proud of him. It will be a huge learning experience for us, so I may reach out to you for advice once in a while. Thank you!

I’m sure that there is some relief in now finally knowing what it is you’re facing. Jake is such a beautiful child…he is so precious and I think that he will excel through this just like he does in every area. He is so smart and so loving, I know he will do great. You guys are just the family that can handle these things, as we all know that your bond is beyond strong and all you want is your children to love life and family. We will be praying for you guys every day. We love you!

Thanks for the links Linda. It’s something that I think we should all be educated on. Jake’s passion, love, and kindness will carry him right along. I think it must be a relief for him to understand there is a why to what he thinks and feels. We’re praying for answers….and joy!
