Dwelling in cliffs

Can you imagine living in clay and rock homes nestled between cliffs on a hillside? These homes were inhabited by the Anasazi about 700 years ago. Homes would support up to 50 people, which is hard to grasp since the rooms are so tiny. These “Ancient Ones” were peaceful and creative, using anything in nature to add color to their pottery or creating more effective weapons for hunting.

If you visit Colorado Springs, you must take time to head West on Highway 24 and visit the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. It’s not only representative of the rich history in Colorado, but of our North America’s heritage.

Jake had a good day. There are times when he forgets he actually has friends. I guess I have some proof now.

Take a spear and shove it in

October 2, 2007 · 5 Comments

feelbads.jpgI went to the Manitou Cliff Dwellings with Jake and his entire third grade today. I plan to tell you all about it and add pictures, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. For now, my head is pulling itself apart, punching the back of my eyes, and jarring against sun. We learned that the Anasazi Indians may have used spears to poke the sides of their heads when feeling this way. For now, I resort to Excedrin Migraine and poetry. Please, take a spear and shove it in!

My head has ached for four full days.
The sky looks different
Through a consuming filter of pain.
The sun is brighter
But brings no joy.
It causes me to turn away.

I can’t look the Beauty in the face
For the intense contrast of
Pain to Beauty
Slashes my mind too pointedly.
