It’s swirling on concrete

October 3, 2007 · 3 Comments

It’s swirling on concrete
And rising with wind
Stirring a pot full of squash,
The sun, moon, and crisp air
Biting us, sometimes.

It’s preparation for scarves
And visions of Santa
Pounding the hammer
Listening to jingles and laughter.
Time yet to get ready for
One Big Night.

It carries us outward,
Upward,
To the sky with hope for fires
Crackling our faces hot
Our toes cold. Ready
To recall seasons of sweetness
In families we love.

It’s pulling sweaters off shelves,
Dusty and dull
Because the night is too crisp to
Wear that sing-song summer tee alone.

It’s a fall of leaves full color
Full power to grab your attention
To stand tall and salute
A time for remembrance
Is here.

She’s a winner

October 3, 2007 · 2 Comments

gladysbattsonjpg_2.jpgMy mom—yes, she’s a winner. She’s resolute, she’s creative, she gives more to her kids than anyone I know… so I’m overjoyed by the fact that she was Deerfield Farmhouse’s Grand Prize winner of this gorgeous folk art doll named Ladye Christiana Campbell, created by incredibly talented dollmaker Christine Crocker.

Notice the banner in her hand. It says “Gladys Battson” in a gorgeous hand-lettered script. Christine’s daughter is Katie Etsvold, whose Sparrows Cottage features folk art, paper craft, quotes, a newsletter reminiscent of The Pickwick Papers from Little Women. It’s women like this that inspire me even more to get busy with my art. Look for an upcoming post featuring dolls made by my own mother. Amazing!

“Art is the result of a creative impulse derived out of a consciousness of life.” —John Sloan (1871-1951)
