It’s back to school, again

I don’t remember having fall break, do you? Well, my kids just finished enjoying a week of relaxation, staying up late, and playing among fallen leaves while the rest of the world was at work.

This week marks my first real bout with college midterms. Until now, I’ve only had to write papers to amplify my understanding… not prove I’ve done my reading by taking tests. I am a little nervous because I don’t want my GPA to go down. Brian jokes with me about it since I have a high A average and he doesn’t think my “charmed existence” is in jeopardy of having that happen. The reality is, though, that school costs a lot of money and takes my time from the kids, so if I’m going to make that exchange, it’d better be worthwhile.

li_lun-l.jpgJake has his 1st third grade book report to work on. They have to choose an animal, and his choice is a fox. This will be a lot of fun. Some of his past book reports include Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln, and Li Lun Lad of Courage by Carolyn Treffinger.

c_0689845510.jpgJulianne is currently working hard to memorize poetry from I’m Still Here in the Bathtub by Alan Katz. She chose to do this on her own, mostly because the novelty of singing different words to familiar tunes is very exciting. Her favorite is I-T-C-H-Y to the tune of B-I-N-G-O. I wish you could hear her practice!

I love books. I even love children’s books. I especially love reading about my grandchildren loving books!! …and memorizing poetry?! Oh, to go back and be a child again!! I should memorize things too. I hear that keeps your mind from fading away with old age!! I am happy to look up your book selections too, and read about what the little ones are reading. I might just have to get the one about the bathtub!! Fall break? That is just a way for the teachers to take some time off …no, never heard of that before. I hope you do great on the midterm exams. I’m proud of you. Charmed life indeed! You work your butt off!! Love, Mommy

I know, Mommy. I feel a little sick about how much I love books. The smell of a bookstore makes me come alive—the paper and ink. I feel gluttonous only after buying more books when I don’t have room on shelves as it is. My solution? Build shelves.

Must read The Odyssey!!! Do it, now. I love you!
